Portraits

Alexander Malev was born on 03.12.1946 in Sofia. He started taking photographs when he was only 13, after he received as a gift his camera „Lyubitel 1″. His first teachers were Boris Strashimirov (chemist) and Todor Pirinski (physicist). He graduated from the „Hristo Botev“ high school of architecture and in 1967 started studying chemistry. After only one semester at the University his passion for photography took him to the polygraph school „Julius Fuchik“ where he studied for three years and obtained knowledge from great photographers such as Yanka Kyurkchieva and Boris Yuskeseliev.

I have always been fond of portrait – reportage as a genre in all it varieties. I have made portraits by applying various techniques. Here I present a small part of the hundreds of portraits I have taken.

In my capacity as a photojournalist I had the chance to be in touch with the intellectual elite of Bulgaria in 70′s, 80′s and 90′s. In this exhibition I present portraits of writers, artists, journalists, singers and actors and also portraits of some party leaders from the past. Same of the photographs are exhibited for the first time due to the censure imposed in the past.
