Young Kertesz & Young Hungarians

An exceptional exhibition featuring rarely displayed early works of one of the major Hungarian photographers and the works of 12 other contemporary Hungarian masters of the art of photography. The exhibition is particularly interesting for the fact that along with the deservedly venerable past of Hungarian photography it presents a glimpse of the present day of this art.
The travelling exhibition entitled “Young Kertesz & young Hungarians” was spawn after the initiative of two Greek curators – Joanna Vasdeki and Jeff Vanderpool, and started its European tour from Athens gallery „Long Room” in 2013. The aim of the selection is to showcase the start of the artistic career of the world renowned photographer Andre Kertesz along with the works of the young generation thus meeting the past and present of Hungarian photography in the same time and space.
Kertesz’ collection displays part of the materials provided by the Andre Kertesz Photo Museum & Memorial House of Szigetbecse. The Memorial House, where the world-famous photographer spent summers in his childhood displays, pursuant to his will, 120 images of the legacy of the master, personal belongings, furniture from his New York home. This precious collection presents 23 of his early images (1910 – 1924) taken mostly in Hungary. Along with the poetic idyl of peasant life, we get impressions of Central Europe in the historic time of World War I.
The contemporary section of the exhibition introduces the artists from the Association of Contemporary Hungarian Photographers – “RANDOM”.
The contemporary section of the exhibition introduces the artists from the Association of Contemporary Hungarian Photographers – “RANDOM”. The conceptual approach of RANDOM embraces the diversity of contemporary trends, various photographic styles thus creating a panorama of contemporary Hungarian art of photography.
Spirituality flows through the contemporary photography section where along with works reviving traditional, archaic photo equipment and techniques are displayed fine-art photography images developing towards socially engaged, urban works.
