Sofia chronicles - 120 year Todor Slavchev

On October 15, 2020 in the National Gallery „Square 500 ″ in Sofia at 17:00 opened the photo exhibition“ Sofia Chronicles „- the big event of the 11th European Month of Photography.
In 120 frames (a symbolic number of photos) on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Todor Slavchev (author of the photographs), were presented about 160 magnificent shots of him.
They were selected by NSFA and the author’s granddaughter Mrs. Yana Uzunova from the rich fund of the „The Factory for images – Todor Slavchev“, carefully preserved over the years by her. She accepted as a personal cause to promote the priceless photo-reporter heritage of her grandfather, and such a dignified attitude to this artistic wealth did not go unnoticed! APB applied with a project to the Culture Program of Sofia Municipality and won it. The result of the financial support of the municipality, in addition to the exhibition, is the book of the same name „Sofia Chronicles“. This is a monograph №2 from the series „Names in Bulgarian Photography Series“ by the Publishing house Academy of Photography Bulgaria. With this exhibition and the book to it, we at APB hope that this wealth will reach a wide range of our contemporaries – both young and old. „Sofia Chronicles“ will take you back like a time machine in a very wide period – from the 30s to the 90s of the 20th century. And only in such a broad and objective figurative walk through the history of Sofia, we can realize that the role of the photographer and his „canvases“ are among the most important to preserve the figurative memory of the past.

On behalf of the hosts of „Square 500″, Deputy. The director Mr. Nikolay Ushtavaliiski greeted the guests in the full lobby of the gallery with words of gratitude. He said that it was a great honor for the National Gallery to be home to this exhibition and a kind of „time machine“. Then he introduced the officials – curator of the exhibition and the book, art photographer Yavor Popov and Mrs. Yana Uzunova, as well as Associate Professor Georgi Lozanov, to whom he gave the floor to open the exhibition with speech. In his usual intriguing and philosophical style, Associate Professor Lozanov fascinatingly introduced us to the essence of the deep process and meaning of the life and work of the chronicler Todor Slavchev, a subjective witness of his time, but also a transmitter of memory from generation to generation. And although refracted through the personal creative gaze and lens of the author, Slavchev has managed to professionally and impartially capture the significant moments in this broad period. And to give all these, to us today! Something that granddaughter Yana Uzunova also believes in, with deep and personal sentimental feelings. She shared how, in an old documentary from an event from the 1960s, she found a personal gift for her – a photo of her, 6 years old. She was „secretly“ called by her grandfather to open this photo up after 50 years! And this her childish image is a messenger to arouse her excitement and interest. He knew she would smile at it and challenge her to explore all his tapes and have the will to tell the present about everything important from the past that happened in front of his lens. And with the exhibition and the book and infront of the the future… And this bridge between generations and time really happens thanks to the „Sofia Chronicles“.
Mr. Treiman, Chairman of the NSFA, continued with gratitude to all those with whose support this happened – Ms. Uzunova, the APB team, the Culture Program of Sofia Municipality and of course the National Gallery.

The exhibition will be on display
until November 15, 2020.
