Photographic original and art practices 2018

Black& White Photography, Photograms, Cyanotypes on sandy primer, Subtractive Printing in Gum Bichromate, Wet Collodion Process –  Ambrotype
Photography Master’s Programme of the National Academy of Art
A Group Exhibition of Antoaneta Panova, Vanesa Lu, Gergana Mudova, Dimitar Vladimirov, Ivan Bogdanov, Ivan Iliev, Lilyana Karadzhova, Mihaela Mihaylova

Curator: Lilyana Karadzhova

The authors from the National Academy of Art suggest an unorthodox approach to the noble and alternative processes. The artistic interpretation discards the transparency of the photographic image but at the same time reminds us that each technique of copying, each classic or modern way of printing inevitably generates surface. Specificities, occurring with various accessibility, openness and intensity, can be revealed beneath each surface. The participants experiment with techniques through which they penetrate the photographic original and release their perception of the “flesh” of a surface. This interference in the image can discover or conceal points of photographic plethora, can express sensitivity to the peculiarities of transparency or seek articulation in cracks of the photographic. According to philosopher Kendall Walton, instead of working with generalizations, we can explore degrees and aspects of transparency and reality. If we follow this line, the window opens through the metaphor of the bars, the keyhole and the tunnel.

Lilyana Karadzhova

Concepts of the exhibition will be addressed in the public lecture of Dr. Lilyana Karadzhova entitled Photography between the Window and the Tunnel: from the Ontological Model of the Object to the Psychological Theories of Perception on June 18, 2018 at 18:30 at Pesha Nikolova Hall, the Red House Center for Culture and Debate.
