Photography is an art of the border, a media whose perimeter describes a complex orbit in the civilizations of the 21st century. Photography blends borders with art, science, communication, everyday life. Photography is divided between ontology and social use, between discourse and the document, between denotation and connotation, being semiotically dependent on inscription and archive, tolerates aesthetic organization in sequences and becomes narrative. At present, this is perhaps the most complex media.

In the 21st century, the turn in imagery has already changed traditional forms of knowledge, and this is what makes photographic research imperative. In 2005, George Baker developed the concept of photography’s expanded field. In the years of post-production and deconstruction of the instruments, photography seeks a bridge to other more stable media. The photographic subject undergoes perpetual transformation. Photography’s expanded field is a group of fields, multiple oppositions and coincidences. According to Baker, post-photography is an expanded practice whose map has never been described or even conceived.

The curatorial goal of Lilyana Karadzhova and Ivan Kyuranov in the exhibition „Borders of Photography“ is to explore photography’s expanded field. The participants have graduated from the Master’s program „Photography“ at the National Academy of Art since 2011 till present and work with the perception of the contemporary identity of the media. The twelve authors outline three areas: visibility and accessibility of the photographic index, the nature of surface in photography and the narrativity in the static image.
