Retrospective

Zhivko Arabov perceived the magic of photography during his studies in the Higher Forestry Institute. Stalking the potential of the moment, capturing the light through the lens, creating a work of art through a photochemical process – this Game has won his heart forever. Soon he became one of the youngest members of the Bulgarian Photo Club. In 1974 he was recognized Fine Art Photographer. In the same year he took over the management of the Photo Club of the Bulgarian Central Students’ House of Culture.

The artistic ambience of the Club turned into a school of its own for many of today’s prominent photographers. For the 19 years since its establishment, the Club has won over 350 individual and collective awards and prizes at photo competitions. Emblematic for the Photo Club is the „Students’ Moments“ contest which later grew into „Students’ Photo Salon“. At these competitions Mr. Arabov introduced an „open jury“ approach where the jurors work in the presence of the participants and actually conduct open lectures in Fine Art Photography.

Zhivko Arabov shoots in his typical realistic colour-saturated style. He is curious for the novelties in photo materials and daringly experiments in the lab. He has been one of the first to introduce the slide sandwich (Orton imagery) technique and is a champion blue hour photographer.

In 1985, Mr. Arabov was recognized Photographer of the Year – a „Bulgarian Photo“ magazine contest. His works have been awarded at numerous competitions and published in the newspapers „Studentska Tribuna“, „Culture“ and in the „Bulgarian Photo“, „Hudozhestvena Samodeynost“ (Amateur Art), „Otechestvo“, „Photo“, „Photo Oko“ and „Orpheus“ magazines. His images illustrate representative albums of important events as the Banner of Piece Children’s Assembly (1985) and the „Beautiful Bulgaria“ Project (2001, 2003, 2005).

After 1990, he became a lecturer in Fine Art Photography at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts and later – at the New Bulgarian University. In 2010, Mr. Arabov was awarded the  plaque of „Yanka Kyurkchieva“ Photo Academy for his contribution to the Bulgarian Art of  Photography. It was the 102 recognition in photographer Zhivko Arabov’s 40-year professional career.

The present exhibition is a retrospection of his life as photographer.
