America On Film
Northern Irish photographer/movie director Mark Hylands began his career in photography at a live concert in 2006, a chance event which led to greater things. Mark soon after began to gather attention with his gritty black & white photographic style from some of the biggest names in rock music, as a result gaining a strong reputation as a trusted and sought after
America On Film is the current result of a long time love affair between Mark and the western states of California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. Mark’s fascination with this area began with the U2 record, The Joshua Tree and the imagery created visually by both the music and the accompanying photographs, all of which were taken in Death Valley, California. America On Film has been a constantly running project since 2008 and documents the remote rural areas of the western states and provides alternative points of view of the urban areas of Las Vegas and San Francisco. The entire project has been created solely using the Leica M6 camera with a selection of black & white film type, no digital cameras are used at any point. Everything captured has been done so in natural light and no digital manipulation, this collection of works provides an alternative and realistic view point of this area, not the America portrayed in glossy Hollywood movies and television shows.
