Beyond the Body

Tomasz Gudzowaty is one of the best known in the world Polish photographers. The start of his artistic career is marked by the winning of the first prize in the Nature section of the most prominent world event in the area of reportage photography – the World Press Photo contest. He is the winner of eight World Press Photo awards and a multiple winner of awards at the profession’s premier contests as Pictures of the Year and NPPA Best of Photojournalism. His favourite format is the recognizable, impressive black and white photo essay. Mr. Gudzowaty is the author of numerous publications in the press and of photo albums. „Beyond the Body“ is the title of his long-year project devoted to sport as a cultural phenomenon. Searching for the essence of this phenomenon, the photographer has directed his attention to conventional or newly established events stemming from local tradition or inspired by the modern global culture, yet expressing the most important values of sport – the call for freedom and the strife for victory along with the spiritual experience of breaking the physical confines of the body.
