National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History is the national institution directly engaged with the preservation of scientific collections of live and non-live nature from Bulgaria and the world. The study of biodiversity, environmental protection and the evolution of organisms are the museum’s major priorities. The main task of NMNHS is the all-around study of the fauna, flora, fossils, minerals and rocks of Bulgaria and other countries. The Museum exhibition is the richest and the largest on the Balkans, placed in the 4-floors building in downtown.
Aside from scientific work, the Museum actively develops cultural and educational programs. Art exhibitions and various cultural and educational events are organized in the lobby.
The Museum is the host of the yearly „European Bat Night“ as it is a part of the EUROBATS agreement.
Since 2011 the Museum has participated every year in the Sofia Paper Art Fest, organized by the Amateras foundation. The Museum provides space for the future artists – the students of 144 School in Sofia.
The various photo exhibitions hosted by the Museum are by tradition connected with nature: „Bulgaria-Taiwan: Traveling with birds“ – a wide format photo exhibition by K.K. Kyo, a nature lover from Taiwan; „Antarctica – The pure Earth“ by Milena Marincheva, a participant in the 20th expedition to Antarctica organized of professor Hristo Pimpirev; „The unknown Kyrgyzstan: an adventure to no man’s land“ by the scientist from the museum, Nikolay Simov, participant in the Bulgarian caving expedition „Tien Shan – 2010″.
The Museum is a place where Bulgarian naturalistic and animalistic artists can freely express themselves. „The music of the forest“ is an exhibition of 12 naturalistic artists dedicated to the Year of the Forest (2010) with Ignata Vasileva as curator; The anniversary exhibition of the artist Asen Ignatov from NMNH; The exhibition with original illustrations by Georgi Pchelarov.
This year the Museum will take part in the Sofia Contemporary Festival with video-installations from Samuil Stoyanov – „10 minutes of the National Museum of Natural History“ and with interactive installations targeted at kids from studio REAKTIV. Directly next to the lobby is the „Leventis“ hall. It is the host of many seminars, presentations, lections and other educational events. It can also be used for art exhibitions or different kinds of workshops.
