If looking for a modern, active, ever alive city in Bulgaria, one should visit Blagoevgrad – economical, cultural and educational center of the South-Western region. Blagoevgrad, first of all, is a city of young people. It has this image thanks to the many Bulgarian and international students in the two universities the city has to offer – AUBG and SWU „Neofit Rilski“, schools and colleges. Here lives the youth and the restless spirit of creativity finding it’s manifestation in the various cultural events of the city taking place all year long in the opera, theaters and galleries.
The municipal art gallery is founded in 1970 as exhibition halls for the Bulgarian artists union in Blagoevgrad. For years they have served the local artists society and all the guests from Bulgaria and abroad. Many interesting exhibitions are organized in this halls. Some of the biggest Bulgarian artists like Dimitar Kirov, Maria Stolarova, Georgi Bozhilov – the elephant, Svetlin Roussev, Vladimir Peshev, Vladimir Dimitrov – the master, have also exhibited their collections here. Since 2013 the exhibition halls are managed by Blagoevgrad Municipality as a Municipal Art Gallery. Its director is the artist Ivan Milushev. Municipal Art Gallery is situated in the centre of the city.
