Sofia City Library

Sofia City Library was established in 1928 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule and 1000 years from the Golden Age of Bulgarian Culture and Literature in the 10th century. Today Sofia City Library is the biggest public library in the country with over 150 000 visitors per year. It is a modern cultural and informational institution with a fund of over 1 000 000 books, periodicals, graphic works, cartographic editions, official publications, printed music, sound records and pictures. Over 200 000 of them are in foreign languages and the visitors have access to them in the specialized reading-rooms – Spanish, German, American, Portuguese and Turkish, united in a Centre for Intercultural Dialogue. The Library has the richest documentation and information archive of the history, development and modern status of Sofia. Of unique and exceptional value is the personal collection of 2055 books of Konstantin Stoilov – Prime Minister of Bulgaria (1894–1899), donated to the Library by his heirs.
The library is an acknowledged and preferred venue for presentations of new books, discussions and colloquiums, exhibitions and concerts.
Sofia City Library is engaged in intensive international activities with similar libraries from Athens, Nish, Belgrade, Bucharest, Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen etc., it maintains relations with foundations, similar cultural institutions, foreign cultural and science centres, the cultural affairs offices of the foreign embassies in Bulgaria. An important aspect of the activities of the Library take the cultural relations with the Bulgarians in the Western Outlands as well as the methodological support of the Library provided to the Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Dimitrovgrad, Serbia.
The future of Sofia City Library focused on extending its activities through participation in projects under European and international programmes, digitalization of the cultural heritage and enhancing the access to the information resources through the global network.
