Eyewitness

Georgi Panamski /born 1934 in Lovetch / is a renowned personality in Bulgarian photojournalism.Raised in a family of a leather manufacturer, persecuted by the communist regime, he managed to graduate law at Sofia University.Panamski’s photographs are linked to the flagships of the socialist press as “Narodna mladezh”, “Rabotnichesko delo”, “Duma”, as well as with “Pressphoto – BTA” and the paper “Football”, where he retired in 1995. Breaking the visual diehard pattern of so called “socialist realism” from the 50’s, from the very start of his career he brought new ideas in the dogmatic visual perceptions of the communist regime – his reporter photos are live, unexpectedly human and generally objective. Bulgarian writer Georgi Mishev notes, that in the times of orchestrated journalism, of false smiles and perfidious censorship Georgi Panamski was not a mechanical photo registrar but an “witness and participant in the event”.
“The Witness” exhibition includes Panamski’s photos from 1960’s to present days. Many of his works won prizes at international competitions, others were shown at his exhibitions “Parliament snapshots”/1991/ and “Portrait of a nation”/1999*.
The photographic evidence of Georgi Panamski is part of the nation’s image memory of a complex period in Bulgaria’s modern history, generally unknown to the young generations.
