Kardzhalians

Visualization of sound spectogram of rolling lid

Visualization of sound spectogram of rolling lid

On today’s art scene, genre boundaries are blurred and unstable, as the author is liberated from formal constrains and is free to choose the medium and the form through which to express his/her ideas. Similarly, the contemporary young person, ever-evolving and constantly seeking, is also unwilling to accept many of the limitations of his/hers environment. As a consequence the migration of young people today, from the small town to the big city, resembles the one of the genres. Unable to express their ideas within the confines of a single genre, artists usually resort to the use of elements and methodology from a similar genre, or completely immerse themselves into a different one. The idea prevails over the formalized gender divisions in the same way the consciousness rejects the limitations of its environment. Drawing from those ideas, the parallel between the different concepts of freedom could clearly be observed through photography.
This project includes a series of photographs, portraits of people from the Kardjali region in Bulgaria, who for one reason or another have left their home town. The shooting approach is a synthesis of different genres while at the same time remains predominantly portrayal. Despite its genre classification, the photographic representation in its essence has a documentary character, only the setting enhances the reality of the portrayed person. It is exactly the setting and its conditions that brings the document at the forefront as a symbol and a projection of reality.
