The Regional Museum of History „Stoyu Shishkov“, Smolyan, established in 1935, is the largest museum in the Middle Rhodopes. The museum stocks the materialized memory of the inhabitants of the highest parts of the mountain from different historical periods – since prehistoric times to the present. It is housed in a building specially designed for the purpose and situated in the modern administrative centre of the town. The permanent exhibit display with the subject Cultural and Historical Heritage of the Rhodopes since Ancient Times to the Present Days has two sections: Archaeology with sub-sections of Pre-history, Thracian tribes, Middle Ages, and Ethnography Section with sub-sections of Traditional costumes, Rite Objects, Traditional Crafts, Rhodopes Architecture and Traditions and our Contemporary Times. Over the years the museum in Smolyan has accumulated rich and varied collections, totaling over 150 thousand units in the main, auxiliary and exchange collections. The Museum organizes various discussions and scientific forums, educational programmes, demonstrations and meetings, books presentations and many others about which you can learn at the site of the institution – www.museumsmolyan.eu.
The permanent exhibit display and the temporary exhibitions have a special platform providing access for disabled people.
