Toilers of the Sea

„…Ah!
How dismal you are,
Human life!
Fisherman’s life! –
M-e-n-a-c-e.
Try put in words – impossible,
Then, much harder
To burst it into a song….“

N.Y. Vaptsarov

Mid-November last year. At the height of the fishing season along the Black Sea coastline, the „Eighth Art“ Photo-club made a dream come true – a plain air was carried out devoted to fishermen’s life and their struggle against natural elements. The motto of the plain air was „Toilers of the Sea – photo essay on Fisherman’s Destiny“ theme. During the four days of the plain air the participants had the chance to get fist-hand experience of the fishermen’s daily routine in Chengene Skala (Burgas district) fishermen’s settlement. A seemingly short period, yet the participants were able to share the sorrow and joy of the fishermen and imprint them in their works. The result is a fascinating selection, a big part of which is taken by the portraits of the toilers of the sea from the settlement. The „Toilers of the Sea“ exhibition was first displayed for the fishermen’s patron Saint’s day – St. Nickolas Day –celebration in their settlement and the Sea Casino Cultural Center (Burgas) simultaneously. Now we are proud to present the best portraits within the Month of Photography 2012 events.
