The Last Project

Shavarsh Artin Palabikyan was born on May 12, 1948 in Sofia. He is among those who laid the foundations of modern Bulgarian photo journalism fusing unique artistic style with reporter’s dynamics and grasp of the moment. The Bulgarian reader remembers his images in the Otechestvo magazine, the Continent and Democracy newspapers and in many other publications. Until the very last moment Shavarsh worked for the new political Leader magazine. The school of successful photoreporters, which Shavarsh legated, has created a distinctive style in the press and took leading position in all central newspapers and magazines, Bulgarian and international agencies.

In June the portraits from the unfinished project of Shavarsh Artin – Shami, one of the greatest names in Bulgarian photo journalism, will be exhibited as part of the “Month of Photography”
5 portraits of homeless people dressed up as ladies and successful  gentlemen from the beginning of the 20th century. The first time his colleague Rada Petkova showed the two women and three men was in 2005, in his memoriam, 40 days after his last breath. Shavarsh had been working on this subject for more than two years. He wanted to reveal how shallow we are when judging people by their appearance. Shami showed us the ones repelled by the society from in a different way, from a different angle. This project is product of months of hard work for gaining the trust of the “models”. They don’t like the camera. Only a man with great psychological approach could reach and work in such an extraordinary way with the “people from the garbage containers”. Shami owned that rare quality. He managed to pull off the first photo session of an extreme makeover.
