Quiet Game

Alena Kotzmannova
(*1974, Prague)

Alena Kotzmannova works mainly with photography, video installations and postroduction work with film material. She analyzes conceptually the very medium of photography and integrates it into older timeframe layers of imaginative black and white photography to suggest open confrontation with other media in the form of adjustment, installations etc. For her, photo images and videos are not mainly the witnessing of a concrete moment or situation, but rather supporting material for the telling of her own stories and fiction. In her later works she addresses, in addition to the evocation of moods, the expressive possibilities and paradoxes of the photographic image.
Alena Kotzmannova studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Studio of Conceptual and Intermedia Works (professor Adela Matasova) and the Studio of Photography (associated professor Pavel Stecha). In 2014 she did her PhD studies, Faculty of Education of Charles University with Art Education major. For her PhD thesis she sought material during her education at Faculdade de Ciencias Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal. In the period 2007-2009 she was the manager of the Possibilities of Contemporary Photography Programme at the Faculty of Design and Art, University of West Bohemia, Pilsen.
Alena Kotzmannova has completed grant-funded creative residencies at, for example, the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York, at the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, at Germinations X in Delphi, Greece and a foreign internship at the Norwich School of Art and Design in Great Britain. In 2005 and 2009 she was a finalist for the prestigious Jindrich Chalupecky Award. Alena Kotzmannova’s photographic works are represented in collections in both the Czech Republic and abroad.
